This is an experimental page to view 3D models associated with the 100th Entry at RAF Locking in 1962 - 1964. Feel free to comment, criticize or make suggestions. All models have been produced with Google Sketchup which is free and suprisingly easy to learn. If you want to have a go, then by all means send me your proposals for consideration.
Ultimately, a scale model of Locking Camp, featuring 100th Entry members and locations, will be registered on Google Earth; this is a long-term project, so don't hold your breath. If you already have Google Earth, view the work in progress by downloading the KMZ file. If you do not have Google Earth, download it from HERE (it's about 13MB). Or click on the "Locking Camp" link above to see the progress so far without using Google Earth.
To view the objects shown in the "List of models" menu at the top of this page, you will need to download a free viewer and browser add-on. This is very similar to the action you have to take in order to read PDF documents or play FLASH movies. The files are quite small and you will be prompted to download them when you try to access the first model. This is a one-off download and, once the files are on your computer, you will not be prompted again. The 3D viewer and browser add-on are supplied by Hypercosm who are widely used and respected among 3D developers. I have been using these files on my computer for quite some time and am pleased with the results. To find out more about Hypercosm, look HERE .
When you call up a 3D model, a small applet is downloaded to control that specific model. This takes a few seconds on broadband and will take longer on dial-up (it is NOT recommended to use dial-up for viewing these models). A symbol is displayed to indicate this process. More complex models will take longer to initialise, so please be patient. Once initialised, the models are fast and very responsive. There is a menu and help button, but basically there are three main controls:
- hold down the left mouse button and drag the mouse to rotate the model.
- hold down the right mouse button and drag the mouse to move the model.
- hold down BOTH mouse buttons and drag the mouse to zoom in and out of the model.
Using these controls, you can navigate around and inside the models.
